هذه دراسة عن حياة وفن الممثل، المدير، المؤلف، نجيب الريحاني. وقد تحول الريحاني إلى التمثيل أولاً-نحو عام 1914-ثم اضطلع بالإدارة الفنية بعد عامين، وكتب أول مسرحية عن الشخصية التي ابتكرها "كشكن بك" عام 1916-وظل يعمل-لأكثر من ثلاثين عاماً، وحتى وفاته عام 1949-على تطوير الكوميديا، ابتداءً من الفصل المضحك، شبيه الكوميديا المرتجلة Commedia dell ' arte، فالاستعراض والأوبريت، حتى الكوميديا الساتيرية Satrical Comedy التي خصها بمغزى أخلاقي واجتماعي جاد.
والواقع أن الريحاني لم يصبح كاتباً مسرحياً بمحض اختياره، بل بالرغم منه... فلم يكن ثمة كتاب لينجز له العمل الذي كان يشعر-بوصفه فناناً مسرحياً - بالحاجة إلى إنشائه. وكانت أغلب مسرحياته مقتبسة، فلم يفكر قط في كتابه مسرحيات "مبتكرة" تماماً. إنما كان يقيم أعماله عادة على قصة أو مسرحية ما، يعثر عليها في "ألف ليلة وليلة" أو في المسرح الأوروبي.
وفي المرحلة الأخيرة من حياته الفنية أخذ يعتمد على المسرح الفرنسي، فكان يعهد لأحد المترجمين بنقل المسرحية الفرنسية التي تنال استحسانه، ثم يتعاون مع "بديع خيري" على إعادة كتابتها على طريقته الخاصة؛ وهكذا تعد مسرحياته، على نحو ما كانت عليه مسرحيات شكسبير وموليير، في حين أنها تحمل بصمات الفنان الواضحة.. وهي ليست "مبتكرة" بقدر ما كانت تقلد المسرح الكوميدي الفرنسي بناءً وتكنيكاً.
