يبحث هذا الكتاب في الكيفية التي يفهم بها الإنسان لغته وتجربته والعلائق الرابطة بينهما، أي كيف تفعل التجربة في اللغة وكيف تفعل اللغة في التجربة. وقد تم انتقاء آليات اشتغال التعابير الاستعارية لقياس هذا التفاعل ورصد بعض أجزائه. إن جزءا هاما من تجاربنا وسلوكاتنا وانفعالاتنا استعاري من حيث طبيعته. إذا كان الأمر كذلك، فان نسقنا التصوري يكون منبنيا جزئيا بواسطة الاستعارة. بهذا لن تكون الاستعارات تعابير مشتقة من "حقائق" أصيلة، بل تكون هي نفسها عبارة عن "حقائق" بصدد الفكر البشري والنسق التصوري البشري . فلاستعمارات الوضعية، من اتجاهية وبنيوية وأنطولوجية، كما نجدها في هذا الكتاب، عبارة عن "حقائق" مثبتة في نسقنا التصوري، تجعلنا ندرك العالم من حولنا ونمارس فيه تجاربنا بشكل استعاري. إننا نجعل الناس في مقام مستفل ونجعل أنفسنا في مقام عال إذا كنا نراقبهم أو نتحكم فيهم (وهذه استعارة اتجاهية توظف البعد الفضائي فوق-تحت)، ونبني نوعا من الوجود المادي للتضخم مثلا، فيكون عدوا نحاربه أو نتضايق منه (وهذه استعارة أنطولوجية)، كما نعامل الزمن كما لو كان مالا حقا، فنضيعه أو نستثمره أو نبدره (وهذه استعارة بنيوية إذ بنيوية إذ نسحب بنية الزمن على المال فنتحدث عن الأول بألفاظ الثاني) .
