يهتم علم الاجتماع بالظواهر الاجتماعية اهتمامًا بالغًا؛ حيث تشكل مجال بحثه الأساسي. ولما كانت الظاهرة الأدبية- في أحد معانيها- ظاهرة اجتماعية فإنها تصير هي الأخرى محل بحث ومجال عمل من قبل علماء الاجتماع. فالعلاقات القوية التي توجد بين الأدب والمجتمع بظواهره المختلفة تجعل من دراسة الأدب داخل نطاق علم الاجتماع ضرورة علمية. وفي هذا الصدد ظهر علم اجتماع الأدب كأحد فروع علم الاجتماع الساعية لمحاولة فهم وتفسير الظاهرة الأدبية، مستخدمًا في ذلك مناهج وأساليب وطرق البحث في علم الاجتماع، وذلك لما يمكن أن تسهم به هذه المحاولة في معرفة كثير من جوانب الواقع الاجتماعي والاستبصار به. هذا وتنتمي الدراسة الراهنة إلى هذا الفرع من فروع علم الاجتماع بشكل عام، وعلم اجتماع الرواية بشكل خاص. حيث تحاول- قدر المستطاع- التعرف على طبيعة العلاقة بين الرواية- كمنتج أدبي- وبين التحولات والتغيرات التي طرأت على قيمة الانتماء في المجتمع، وذلك من خلال رصد الكيفية التي تعاملت بها الرواية مع هذه القيمة وما طرأ عليها من تغير في الفترة من نهاية الستينيات وحتى نهاية التسعينيات من القرن العشرين.
