لم تحظ دراسة الليزر والألياف الضوئية بالدراسات التي تتجه إلى المهندسين والفنيين وطلبة البرامج الهندسية، وبينما يقود السوق المنتج، فإن المعاهد التي تدرسها مهمة للمواد التي تدعم هذا الموضوع، وهذا الكتاب سيدعم الحاجة للمعلومات الفنية النظرية على الأقل لهذا الإتجاه. فقد حاولت تغطية كل الموضوعات المرتبطة بمقدمة الليزر والألياف الضوئية مبتعداً عن الرياضات ما أمكن مع التزود بكمية كافية منها لشرح العناوين والسماح بمزيد من المعلومات لمن يريد، والغرض من هذا الكتاب هو إعطاء مقدمة للموضوع بمستوى يسمح للطلبة الدارسين للهندسة الكهربية، الفيزياء، الهندسة البصرية باستخدام هذا الكتاب، وقد بدأ الكتاب بمقدمة عن الليزر وتاريخه وتطوره وخواصه... ثم تطرق إلى أنواع الليزر الغازي H-Ne والغازات المتآينة، ليزر بخار المعادن، وكذل ليزر ثاني أكسيد الكربون وكذا النيتروجين... ثم ليزر المواد الصلبة (الياقوت، النيودميوم YAG، النيودميوم، زجاج) ثم ليزر أشباه الموصلات (الدايود LED....) وليزر الإلكترون الحر، ميزر رنين السيكلترون. وتلا ذلك فصل عن تطبيقات الليزر شمل القدرة المخفضة، معالجة المواد بالليزر والمعاملات الحرارية واللحام وكذا القطع، التثقيب، الكشط والتشغيل الدقيق، وكذا التطبيقات الطبية المختلفة لليزر في التشخيص والعلاج والجراحة، ثم تطبيقات الليزر في حرب النجوم، وتلا ذلك فصل عن مقدمة الألياف الضوئية حيث تناول طبيعة الألياف، مميزاتها وعيوبها وتاريخ تطورها ثم طرق تصنيفها، وبعد ذلك دخلنا في دراسة فيزياء، الضوء في فصل تال حيث تم تناول علم البصريات الفيزيائي والهندسي والكمي مع التطبيقات.
