يصلح هذا الكتاب كمرجع للعاملين في مجال الاتصالات من إداريين ومهنيين، كما يمكن استخدامه كمدخل أولي لدراسة منهجية في الاتصالات عبر الألياف البصرية. وينقسم الكتاب إلى اثني عشر فصلاً. يقدم الفصل الأول نظرة عامة إلى أنظمة الاتصالات وتطورها. ويعطي الفصل الثاني شرحاً لعناصر أنظمة الاتصالات عبر الألياف البصرية ويستعرض أنواع الألياف البصرية واستخداماتها. أما الفصل الثالث فيقدم مبادئ أساسية حول الموجات الضوئية والبصريات، وتشرح الفصول اللاحقة بنية وخصائص الألياف البصرية وظروف تصنيعها وأنواع الكابلات المصنوعة منها. ويطرح الفصل السابع موضوع توصيلات عناصر أنظمة الألياف البصرية ويقدم الفصل الثامن خصائص ومواصفات المنابع الضوئية، ويعطي الفصل التاسع خصائص ومواصفات الكواشف الضوئية وتحدثت الفصول المتلاحقة الباقية عن طرق قياس معلمات الآليات البصرية وطرق التشكيل وتعدد الإرسال المستخدمة في أنظمة اتصالات الألياف البصرية ومن ثم يقدم المؤلف عشر اتصالات للألياف البصرية بشكل متكامل، ويشمل ذلك شرحاً لمواصفاتها ومنهجية تصميمها.
