انحرف الكثيرون عن تعاليم الإسلام وذلك في القرنين الرابع الخامس الهجريين، وسيطر الصوفية على عقول الناس، وظهرت البدع والخرافات والأساطير، حتى جاء الإمام الغزالي، وعمل على تنقية التصوف من الأفكار الدخيلة والرجوع به إلى حظيرة الإسلام، فأحيا التصوف على المنهج السني بعد نكبة التصوف لدى مدرسة الحلاج وما أثارته من فتن ضد التصوف عامة، وجعل من التصوف علماً إلى جانب ما فيه من العمل، وجعل منه نظرية ذوقية في المعرفة، وطريقة روحية تؤدي إلى السعادة. وقد تلقى أهل السنة من المسلمين هذا التصوف بالقبول الحسن وأحلوه محلاً رفيعاً إبان القرن الخامس للهجرة، واختفى التصوف الفلسفي وانتشر التصوف السني.
ولكن لم يكد القرن السادس يظل الناس حتى كانت قد ظهرت طائفة من غلاة الصوفية الذين خلطوا مسائل الكلام والفلسفة الإلهية بالتصوف، فتكلموا في النبوات والشرائع وحقائق الموجودات العلوية والسفلية وكيفية صدورها عن موجدها، وتحدثوا عن الاتحاد بين الرب والعبد، وحلو الحق في الخلق وعن التجلي ووحدة الوجود، وكما قيض الله للأمة الإسلامية من يأخذ على عاتقه العودة إلى حظيرة الإسلام وتنقية التصوف من الخرافات والأوهام وذلك في القرن الخامس الهجري على يد حجة الإسلام الإمام الغزالي، كذلك شاءت إرادة الله أن يظهر مصلح آخر أخذ على عاتقه تنقية الفكر الإسلامي عامة والتصوف خاصة من الأفكار والدخيلة ذلك هو شيخ الإسلام الإمام ابن تيمية الذي بدأ يهاجم فكرة الحلول والاتحاد ووحدة الوجود التي دخلت التصوف الإسلامي، وحاول الرجوع بالتصوف الإسلامي إلى حظيرة الدين، مهاجماً كل بدعة أحدثتها الصوفية. ولذا جاء اختيار الباحث لموضوع "التصوف بين الغزالي وابن تيمية" ليكون مداراً للبحث والدراسة في هذا الكتاب.
