وحرصاً من الباحث "شفيق الارناؤوط" على وحدة الآمة والمجتمع وعلى حث الأهل إلى تسمية أبناءهم تسميات عربية أصيلة عني بوضع هذا القاموس الذي يحتوي على دراسة مستفيضة للأسماء العربية قديماً وحديثاً، وهو يحتوي على زهاء ثلاثة آلاف اسم منها المنشر، ومنها القليل الانتشار، منها الجديد، ومنها التقليدي، كلها يحوي معاني مختلفة، ويرمي إلى مسميات متنوعة الأهداف، ويغلب على أكثرها رقة الجرس، وسهولة اللفظ، وهي جميعها مستقاة من فهارس أمهات الكتب، ومن الصحف وجداول تسجيل الطلاب في المدارس والجامعات فضلاً من المراجع والمصادر المختلفة. هذا ولم يغفل الباحث ذكر أسماء أعجمية وأخرى تركية ذات أصل عربي، وهدفه مساعدة الأهل على اختيار ما يحلو لهم من الأسماء لإطلاقها على أولادهم دون أن يدفعهم مركب النقص إلى بعض التسميات الأجنبية.
