من الملاحظ أن كل قطر من أقطارنا العربية يحتفظ لنفسه بأسماء لا تكاد نجدها في الأقطار الأخرى، حتى أن الاختلاف في الأسماء قد يكون موجوداً في مدينة دون أخرى في القطر الواحد، وهناك أسماء خاصة بالمسلمين لا تطلق على أصحاب الديانات الأخرى وما تزال آثارها بادية للآن. إن أكثر الأسماء في البلاد العربية ذات صلة بالتراث الديني، وقد روى بالأثر: (خير الأسماء ما حمد وعبد)، ويليها شهرة أسماء الأنبياء والصحابة. كان الناس في الجاهلية والعصور الإسلامية الأولى يألفون الأسماء التي فيها خشونة وقسوة مثل: صخر ومرة وحنظلة وسيف. أو من أسماء النباتات الصحراوية مثل: حنظلة وقتادة وعرفطة وأرطأة وبسر. أو من أسماء المياه مثل: غدير وبحر وماء السماء وسيل.
وحين سئل أحدهم على غرار أسماء الشخصيات البارزة الذين كان لهم شهرة في ميادين السياسة أو البطولة أو التاريخ أو الأدب مثل: هارون والمنصور والمأمون وصلاح وقتيبة وخالد وسبحان ومالك ودريد وحاتم وغسان وحسّان وغير ذلك كثير. كما انتشرت في زمن الثورة العربية والثورات الوطنية أسماء مثل: فيصل وغازي وعرابي وسعد زغلول وجمال وعبد الناصر وصدام، كما أنه دخلت الكثير من الأسماء الدخيلة إلى لغتنا العربية من الفارسية مثل: بوران وشيرين وخالويه وسيبويه، وهناك أسماء جاءت عن العبرية هي معروفة مثل: موسى وعيسى وسليمان.
وجاءت أسماء من اللغة التركية مثل أجاويد وتيمور ومردم ، حتى أن أسماءنا لم تخل من بعض الأسماء الأوروبية، مثل جورج وهنري وماري، هذا ما عدا ما دخل على لغتنا من لأسماء اليمنية والحبشية والهندسية والفارسية مثل: دي يزن، وبلقيس ومعد يكرب.
ولما كان على الوالدين التفكير في معنى الاسم الذي يطلقونه على ولدهم فقد جاء هذا الكتاب لمساعدتهم وذلك من خلال تقديمه لمجموعتين كبيرتين من السماء المجموعة الأولى لأسماء الصبيان ومعناها والمجموعة الثانية لأسماء النبات ومعناها. ومما تجدر الإشارة إليه هو أن اختيار هذه الأسماء قد طال كافة الأسماء القديمة والحديثة الموجودة في بطون الكتب والمطولات.
