يدور موضوع هذا الكتاب حول الصلة بين التصوف والتشيع، وليس من السهل تبين هذه الصلة بين العالمين، لأن أموراً قد جدت على كل منهما منذ بدأ في الإسلام حتى صار مستقلاً مستغنياً عن الآخر.
ومن الغريب أنه قد ظهر في الحياة الإسلامية ثلاثة إتجاهات ما تزال ثابتة ظاهرة للعيان، فقد نجد ناحية من العالم الإسلامي تسودها مذاهب أهل السنة، ونجد مكاناً آخر تسوده مذاهب الشيعة، ونلمح مناطق ثالثة يغلب عليها التصوف مختلطاً بإحدى هاتين المجموعتين من المذاهب.
ومن الملاحظ أن المسلم يستطيع الإستغناء عن مذاهب أهل السنة إذا كان شيعيّاً، وعن مذاهب الشيعة إذا كان سنيّاً، ويستطيع كل من السني والشيعي، أن يحيا حياة إسلامية دون ان يتصل ذهنه بالتصوف ونظرياته وعملياته؛ غير أن المتصوف لا يستطيع الإستغناء عن أحد هذين الإتجاهين الإسلاميين.
فلا بد ان تتصل الطرق الصوفية - وهي في حكم المذاهب الإسلامية من حيث تنظيمها لمجتمعها عقيدة وإجتماعاً - بإتجاه من هذين الإتجاهين الإسلامين؛ فمن المعروف أن النقشبندية مثلاً من الطرق الصوفية السنية، والبكتاشية من الطرق الشيعية، فتدخل الأولى في فرق أهل السنة والثانية في فرق الشيعة، وإن كان المتصوفة أنفسهم قد حاولوا أن تجعلوا من الصوفية فرقة إسلامية مستقلة عن كلا هذين الإتجاهين.
هذا الكتاب بجناحيه يتناول الأول منهما دور التشيع في القرون الثلاثة الاولى في إمداد التصوّف بسماته التفصيلية في الولاية والسمو الروحي، ويتناول الثاني منهما دور التصوّف - بعد نضجه وإستقلاله - في ردّ هذا الدَّين إلى التشيّع.
ومن عجب أن هذه العملية المتبادلة تمت دون ضجيج ودون كثير إتصال بل لقد تحققت النتائج التي دوّنها هذا الكتاب، والمشربان المذكوران سائران في خطّين متوازيين كقضبان السكة الحديد، وكأن شرار كل منهما وصل إلى الآخر بفعل القاطرة التي تحركهما والطاقة التي سيّرهما، ولا بد من تشبيههما بالكيان الإسلامي منطلقاً وتطوّراً.
