في يوم 9 نوفمبر/ تشرين الثاني عام 1977 وقف الرئيس الراحل أنور السادات تحت قبة مجلس الشعب المصري ليقول في خطاب رسمي: إنه مستعد للذهاب إلى أي مكان سعيًا وراء السلام، وحقنًا لدماء أي جندي، ولو كان الكنيست الإسرائيلي؟! ولم يمر أسبوع حتى وجه بناحيم بيجن رئيس وزراء إسرائيل دعوة رسمية للسادات لزيارة إسرائيل. وقبل الرئيس السادات الدعوة التي تحدد لها يوم 19 نوفمبر/ تشرين الثاني 1977.
وفي اليوم المحدد للزيارة أعلن وزير الخارجية المصري إسماعيل فهمي استقالته، وتبعه بعد ساعات قليلة محمد رياض وزير الدولة للشؤون الخارجية، وقد سافر السادات إلى إسرائيل في نفس اليوم بعد أن عين بطرس غالي مكان محمد رياض، بينما ظل منصب وزير الخارجية شاغرًا، ووقف السادات ليلقي خطابه في الكنيست يوم 20 نوفمبر/ تشرين الثاني 1977. ثم تم تعيين محمد إبراهيم كامل صاحب هذه المذكرات يوم 24 ديسمبر/ كانون الأول 1977، وسافر في اليوم التالي للاشتراك في مباحثات الإسماعيلية بين مصر وإسرائيل، وفي 5 سبتمبر/ أيلول سافر مع الرئيس السادات إلى الولايات المتحدة لحضور مباحثات كامب ديفيد بين السادات والرئيس الأمريكي كارتر، ومناحم بيغن. وفي 16 سبتمبر/ أيلول خدم محمد إبراهيم كامل بوصفه وزير خارجية مصر استقالته للرئيس السادات بعد حديث استمر نصف ساعة، لكن الرئيس طلب منه عدم إعلانها حتى عودتهما والوفد إلى القاهرة.
في مساء الأحد 17 سبتمبر/ أيلول، غادرت الوفود الثلاثة (المصري والأمريكي والإسرائيلي) كامب ديفيد بطائرات الهليكوبتر إلى البيت الأبيض حيث تم التوقيع على ما عرف باتفاقيات كامب ديفيد، وتوالت الزلازل بعدها على العالم العربي، وبدأ وما زال أكبر موضوع جدلي في القرن العشرين على مستوى العالم أجمع. وفي فصول هذا الكتاب قصة الأشهر العشرة التي قضاها محمد إبراهيم كامل وزيرًا للخارجية مع الرئيس أنور السادات، يرويها بكل أمانة وموضوعية، وإن بدت أحداثها أغرب من الخيال.
