إذا كان المفروض في الواقعية ان تكون صادقة, الا ان بعض الكتاب الذين يزعمون أنهم واقعيون لا يفرقون بين الصدق والخيال, ولكنك اذ تقرأ مسرحيات جوركي- ونحن نقصر الحديث هنا علي مسرحياته وحدها- تحس منذ البداية أنك أمام كاتب صادق لا يخترع ولا يتخيل, وانما يسجل الصور التي رآها ولمسها وانطبعت في ذكراته والتي تركت في نفسه أثرا طاغيا لم يكن بد من ان يدفعه الي الكتابة والتسجيل.
وأنت اذ تعيش مع الشخصيات التي خلقها جوركي في مسرحياته, انما تعيش معها مشفقا عليها, محبا لها, راثيا لها حظها من البؤس والفاقة,فالشرير في مسرحيات جوركي ليس شريرا بالمعني الذي نفهمه نحن من هذه الكلمة, ليس مجرما يستحق الشنق أو السجن, وانما هو, بشره هذا, من نتاج مجتمعه, فالمجتمع هو المسئول الاول, فنحن نري مثلا "الرجل العجوز" في هذه المسرحية يلاحق "ماستاكوف" ويصر علي الانتقام منه, وهو يعلم حق العلم ان ماستاكوف رجل كريم خير لا يسىء الي احد.
ولكنك مع ذلك لا تملك الا ان تعطف علي هذا "الرجل العجوز" فهو ليس شريرا أبدا, وانما هو ذو شخصية معقدة, ذاق مرارة الحرمان والؤس والنفي والتشريد, فهو يريد ان ينتقم لنفسه من اى انسان, وقد سنحت له فرصة الانتقام من ديقه اتلقديم "ماستاكوفي", ولكنه معذ لك يتردد ولا يستطيع ان يصل الي قرار, ولا ان يهتدي الي خير سبيل للانتقام, ويظل في تردده هذا الي ان تواجهه كارثة تهز كيانه, فأنت اذ تعيش مع "الرجل العجوز" لا بد ان تشعر بالعطف عليه, فكم من ملايين البشر يعانون مثل هذه الحال النفسية, كلهم جديلر بالمرثاء والعطف! هذه هي الواقعية الصادقة التي امتاز بها جوركي, وهي سر نجاحه ككاتب مسرحي.
