يدور هذا الكتاب حول دراسة العلاقة بين الدين والسياسة، ونشأة وتطوّر تلك العلاقة في أي مجتمع إنساني ومن ثم إستخلاص الأنساق الفكريّة الحاكمة والمؤطّرة لها، وما يمكن أن ينتج عن تفاعلها - الديني والسياسي - من أنساق جديدة تتجه إعتدالاً أو تشدّداً طبقاً لظروف هذه العلاقة، وما هي المتغيّرات التي يمكن رصدها في ما يتعلّق بالدين عندما يدخل معترك السياسة؟...
كمحاولة البعض توظيف الدين لإضفاء شرعيّة زائفة على المواقف السياسيّة عبر ليّ عنق الرؤى الدينيّة لتتواءم والموقف السياسي المسبق، وفي المقابل إنصياع القرار السياسي لرغبة ورؤية رجال الدين، وأثر ذلك كله على المجتمع، ومن ناحية أخرى أثره على الفكر الديني ذاته في إقترابه أو إبتعاده عن مقصده الذي أنزل من أجله.
وفي هذا الكتاب تأتي إسرائيل كنموذج دراسة حالة، إذ تجسّد بشكل اقرب للمثاليّة كل أزمات وإشكاليات ومحدّدات العلاقة بين الديني والسياسي ومن ثم إنعكاس مخرجات تلك العلاقة على المجتمع الإسرائيلي من ناحية وعلى مجريات الصراع العربي الصهيوني من ناحية أخرى.
تكمن أهميّة هذا الكتاب في أنه محاولة لفهم جدليّة العلاقة بين اليهوديّة والصهيونيّة، ليس من منظور تاريخي فحسب، ولكن عبر التركيز على فعاليات هذه العلاقة في اللحظة الراهنة، والتي عبّرت عن نفسها بقوّة في شكل العلاقات بين الحركات الدينية هذه وبين الدولة الإسرائيلية، فهي علاقة قديمة حديثة.
