إن أهم معضلات الفلسفة العربية التوفيق بين الفلسفة والإيمان: تلاقى هذان في عقل الفيلسوف المسلم، فكان صراع داخلي، وكان إختيار، وقال الفيلسوف ما عدّه المتكلّم كفراً، فكان صراع خارجي، وكان جدال.
والتهافتان اعنف مظهر لصراع الفلاسفة والمتكلمين: الغزالي أضخم متكلّم هاجم الفلسفة، وابن رشد أضخم فيلسوف تصدّى للدفاع، والإثنان استعرضا أهم مسائل الخلاف، وأوردا الأدلة، فجمعا في كتابين ما تبدّد في كتب، وقدّما لهواة الفلسفة العربية خلاصة فات نظيرها.
في مقدمات التهافت، يصف لنا الغزالي طائفة من الفلاسفة ادّعوا الذكاء، وأهملوا الشرائع، إقتداءً بفلاسفة اليونان، وترفعاً عن العامة، ثم يطلعنا الغزالي على القصد من تأليف كتابه، وهو الردّ على هؤلاء الفلاسفة، لإظهار ضلالهم وتناقضهم، على أنه لن يجادل جميع الفلاسفة لئلا ينتشر الكلام بإنتشار المذاهب، بل يقتصر على الفارابي وابن سينا، لأنهما خير من أخذ عن أرسطو، "الفيلسوف المطلق، والمعلّم الأول" ولن يجادل في كل ما قاله الفلاسفة، بل في ما يصدم أصلاً من أصول الدين.
أما ابن رشد فيحدّد غايته تحديداً واضحاً وجيزاً: "إن الغرض، في هذا القول، أن نبيّن مراتب الأقاويل، المثبتة في كتاب التهافت، في التصديق والإقناع، وقصور أكثرها عن مرتبة اليقين والبرهان.
في هذا الكتاب دراسة لكتابي تهافت الفلاسفة للغزالي وتهافت التهافت لابن رشد وذلك لأهمية هذين الكتابين حيث قام المؤلف بالحديث عن تاريخ الكتابين، وأهميتهما وغايتهما، ومدى تعبيرهما عن تفكير صاحبيهما، ونهجهما بأسلوب علمي رصين.
