يقوم علماء النبات من قديم الأزل بتقسيم النباتات إلى مجموعات تبعاً لدرجة التشابه، والتماثل فيما بينها حيث يوفر هذا الترتيب طريقة منطقية لتنظيم المعلومات الخاصة بالنباتات، كما يقدم تصورا عن أواصر القرابة، وعلاقات النسب بين النباتات المختلفة.
ويعتمد تصنيف النباتات على مظهرها الخارجي، وتركيبها الداخلي، وتنظيم أعضاء التكاثر وغير ذلك نم الاعتبارات التي تقدمها كافة العلوم المرتبطة بالعلوم المرتبطة بالعلوم البيولوجية، ومع ذلك لا يتفق جمهور العلماء على الطريقة التي تصنف بها النباتات، وبالتالي يوجد عدد من نظم التقسيم المختلفة لمملكة النبات وإن اتفقت جميعها في الوقت الراهن في أخذ علاقة النشأة والنسب والقرابة بين النباتات أساسا للتصنيف، كما تستند هذه النظم إلى التاريخ السلفي وتراعي التعاقب التطوري للنباتات.
يتناول الجزء الأول من هذا الكتاب أساسيات علم تقسيم النبات، ويقدم الجزء الثاني شرحا موجزا للأقسام المختلفة التي تتكون منها مملكة النبات مع التركيز أساسا على الصفات العامة ودورة حياة الفئات التصنيفية الأساسية للنباتات.
