إن أى كتاب فى نظم المعلومات الجغرافية لا يزيد فى وضعه عن كونه كتابا ينقل فكرة محددة وهى: استخدام تكنولوجيا حديثة فى مجال علم الجغرافيا، وعالم الجغرافيين، وكذلك العاملين فى المجالات والتخصصات الأخرى، وجميع الجوانب والأغراض التى يمكنها استخدام هذه التكنولوجيا والاستفادة منها. أى ان العملية تتوقف عند طرح الفكرة فقط -أما عملية الاستخدام الفعلى والتطبيق العملى والفهم الصحيح لهذه التكنولوجيا يصبح رهنا لثلاثة جوانب أساسية هى: أولاً: مدى استعداد الأشخاص الذين يرغبون فى استخدام هذه التكنولوجيا، وإمكانياتهم الشخصية والعلمية.
ثانياً: وعلى الجانب الآخر مدى ما يتوافر لهؤلاء الأشخاص من إمكانيات مادية ومستلزمات تشغيل وعمل، بغرض استخدام هذه الأساليب الحديثة. فقد توجد الخبرات ولكن لا توجد الامكانيات، ثالثاً: يتوقف الامر على مدى توافر ما يمكن أن نطلق عليه المناخ العلمى Scientific Atmosphere، والذى يمثل البيئة التى سوف تنمو وتعيش فيها هذه المفردات، والتى ستوفر له امكانيات التطور والنمو وحركة الاستمرار.
وهذا الكتاب رغم ما يقدمه من إمكانيات تعليمية حديثة وبسيطة فى نفس الوقت، وما يحتويه من قيمة علمية وعملية فإنه لا يعدو أن يمثل نافذة صغيرة نحاول فتحها على العالم المتقدم، بغرض إدخال شعاع من التكنولوجيا المتطورة. أو أنه يمثل قناة لنقل بعض من ما لدى هذا العالم المتقدم، حتى يمكنا أن نلحق بركب الحضارة.
