إن كتاب (الدرر المختار، شرح تنوير الأبصار) قد طار في الأقطار، وسار في الأمصار، وفاق في الاشتهار على الشمس في رائعة النهار، حتى أكبّ الناس عليه، وصار مفزعهم إليه، وهو الحريّ بأن يطلب، ويكون إليه المذهب، فإنه الطراز المذهب في المذهب، فلقد حوى من الفروع المنقحة، والمسائل المصححة، ما لم يحوه غيره من كبار الأسفار، ولم تنسج على منواله يد الأفكار، بيد أنه لصغر حجمه، ووفور علمه، قد بلغ في الإيجاز، إلى حد الإلغاز، وتمنع بإعجاز المجتاز في ذلك المجاز عن إنجاز الإفراز بين الحقيقة والمجاز.
وقد كنت صرفت في معاناته برهة من الدهر، وبذلت له مع المشقة شقة من جديد العمر، واقتنصت بشبكة الأفهام أجل شوارده، وقيدت بأوتاد الأقلام جل أوابده، وصرت في اليل والنهار سميره، حتى أسر إلىّ سرّه وضميره، وأطلعنى على حوره المقصورات في الخيام، وكشف لي عن وجوه مخدّراته اللثام، فطفقت أوشي حواشي صفائح صحائفه اللطيفة، بما هو في الحقيقة بياض للصحيفة، ثم أردت جمع تلك الفوائد، وبسط سمط هاتيك الموائد، من متفرقات الحواشي والرقاع، خوفاً عليها من الضياع.
