تناول المؤلف في هذه الدراسة جزءاً هاماً من تاريخ العلاقات الأميركية- اليمنية في فترة ما بين الحربين العالميتين (1918-1939)م كانت فيها المتغيرات الدولية والمحلية سريعة الإيقاع وتأثرت بها تلك العلاقات وخاصة في مجال النشاط التجاري الأميركي في اليمن،وذلك من خلال استقراء مجموعة هامة من وثائق الأرشيف القنصلي الأميركي في عدن في الفترة المشار إليها، وهذه العلاقات تحكمت فيها النظرية الاقتصادية الأميركية (الحرية الاقتصادية) وكانت فلسفة السياسة الأميركية قائمة على سياسة الباب المفتوح، وفي الوقت نفسه اتباع سياسة العزلة السياسية دون التورط في مشكلات دولية .
كما كانت العلاقات الأميركية- اليمنية في فترة البحث فيما بين الحربية العالمتين لا تقوم على معاهدة أو اتفاقي، بل كانت إمكانية التوصل إلى معاهدة واعتراف أميركي باليمن هدفاً يسعى إليه إمام اليمن الإمام يحي حميد الدين، إذ كان يرى في الولايات المتحدة دولة كبرى يمكن أن يفيد منها في تنمية بلاده والإفادة منها ضد أطماع الدول الكبرى الأخرى، خاصة بريطانيا، وإيطاليا، كما كان يرى في المعاهدة والاعتراف عاملاً مساعداً كبيراً في تسهيل الحصول على السلاح الأميركي الذي هو في أمس الحاجة له.
