خالد العظم الذي حكم في سورية وزيراً ورئيساً للوزراء ونائباً وسفيراً ورجل اقتصاد من الطراز الأول، ينحدر من آل العظم الذي كان لهم دور بارز في تاريخ الشام في العصر العثماني والذين ما تزال آثارهم ماثلة للعيان في دمشق وحماة والمعرة وغيرها.
وفي الخمسينيات، أصبح خالد العظم من أشهر رجال السياسة والاقتصاد داخل سورية وخارجها، وفاز بأعلى نسبة من أصوات الناخبين في دمشق في انتخابات سنة 1954م، وكاد يدخل قصر الرئاسة في المهاجرين لفولا أن تخالف الآخرون ضده ولم يكن له حزب ولا جماعة ولا أعوان يطبلون ويزمرون له كما كان للآخرين، لأنه كان يستمد قوته من الشعب مباشرة، وقد زادت شهرته في السنوات التي سبقت قيام الجمهورية العربية المتحدة سنة 1958م.
وقد نشرت مذكراته في بيروت في ثلاثة أجزاء، وهي تشكل المصدر الرئيسي عنه، وفيها معلومات مهمة عن تاريخ سورية والشرق العربي على مدى ستين عاماً، ولكن حجمها الكبير جعل الإفادة منها محدودة، والكتاب الذي بين يدينا يأتي ليكون دليلاً لهذه المذكرات أو فهرساً مفصلاً لها، في محاولة لتقديم صورة طبيعية صادقة عن هذا الرجل الذي تعد مذكراته ومذكرات السياسيين الآخرين، من أهم مصادر تاريخ سورية المعاصرة، وذلك بعد مرور أربعين عاماً بالتمام والكمال على وفاته.
وقد زود الكتاب بمجموعة كبيرة من الصور التاريخية عمن ورد ذكرهم فيه وذلك لربط الحاضر بالماضي، وتذكير أبناء سورية الذين ينعمون اليوم بنعمة الاستقلال والحرية، بمن ساهم في بناء بلدهم ومقاومة المستعمر وصنع الاستقلال وفوق ذلك فإن هذا الكتاب يعد تاريخاً لسورية في السنوات الستين في القرن العشرين.
سليل آل العظم، وآخر حكامهم في دمشق سمّوه المليونير الأحمر، والبورجوازي النبيل. عاصر حكام دمشق منذ جمال باشا حتى جمال عبد الناصر قيل عنه الكثير، وقال عن غيره الكثير.
وهذا الكتاب فيه: تاريخ آل العظم، تاريخ خالد العظم ومناصبه وأعماله ووزاراته وآراؤه في شكري القوتلي والعديد من رجال السياسة والعسكر. وفيه حياته الخاصة، في أيامه الأخيرة، رحمه الله. فهو تاريخ أمة في حياة رجل.
