صدر كتاب "تحرير المرأة" لأول مرة عام (1316هــ/ 1899م)، وعقب نشره أثار زوبعة، أو معركة فكرية وإجتماعية في الثقافة والمجتمع العربيين، ونال قاسم أمين قدراً لا بأس به من الهجوم الشخصي والموضوعي؛ بلغ حد أن مُنع من دخول قصر الخديوي، وانبرى العديد من الكُتّاب للردّ عليه، وكان من أبرز هؤلاء طلعت حرب في كتابه "تربية المرأة والحجاب" الذي طُبع لأول مرة عام (1317هـ/1899م).
حمَّل قاسم أمين وزر تخلف الأسرة والوطن على عادات حجب الوجه وعزل النساء وحرمانهن من التعليم؛ مما جعل من قضية المرأة قضية محورية وتأسيسية تتعلق بالأمَّة ككل وليس بالنساء فقط، وهو ما زاد من حِدة الهجوم عليه.
يأتي الكتابان في سياق الرأي والرأي الآخر، في حقبة شهدت بزوغ وتطور فكرة الحرية وقضية التحرر كقضية وطنية شاملة، تتضمن تحرر الإنسان، وتحرر الوطن من قيود التخلف والتبعية والإحتلال؛ في هذا السياق جاءت قضية تحرر المرأة كجزء من سياق أشمل لتحرر الإنسان الفرد، وتثبيت قيم المساواة.
