إن اتصال الشرق بالغرب، وتبادل التأثير بينهما، هو محور هذا الكتاب الذي كان في الأصل مجموعة من الدراسات التي أُلقيت في مؤتمر علمي بجامعة برنتسون الأمريكية عقد بمناسبة الاحتفال بعيدها المئوي الثاني، وخصصته لدراسة الشؤون الثقافية والاجتماعية للشرق الأوسط.
ويستعرض هذا الكتاب بمنظوره التاريخي تلك العلاقة التفاعلية بين الحضارات بين هذين الجانبين من العالم بسلبياتها وإيجابياتها، وقد مرت تلك العلاقة بطورين، أولهما كانت فيه للشرق الريادة والقدرة على التأثير في الغرب، وفي ثانيهما، انعكست الآية، وأخذ الشرق دور المتلقي من الغرب. وينقسم الكتاب إلى جزءين، في أولهما يعرض للفن الإسلامي والآثار الإسلامية والأدب الإسلامي العربي والعلوم وغيرها من مظاهر الحضارة العربية الإسلامية، ثم ينتقل إلى الجزء الثاني ليتحدث عن التقاء الشرق بالغرب، ويناقش فيه قضية تفاعل الفكر الإسلامي بالفكر الغربي في العصر الحديث، على الساحات المختلفة في إيران وتركيا والبلدان العربية.
