كان الإمام الشافعي من أشعر الناس وآدب الناس، وكانت لغته فتنه، ومع علو لغة الشافعي في كل أقواله فإن شعره سهل ممتنع، ولعلك إذا قست قطعة من نثره بمقطعة من شعره بدا لك الفرق بين اللغتين، فإنه في النثر يختار أجزل الألفاظ، ويحيل إلى الغريب والصعب. أما ألفاظه في الشعر فلن تعثر فيها على غريب ولا صعب، بل كان جل شعره سهلاً واضحاً.
وكان شعر الإمام الشافعي كله مقطعات، فلم ينظم قصائد طوالاً، ولذا سهل الاقتباس منه والاستدلال به. ولما كان الشافعي قد قصد في شعره إلى السهولة والوضوح وسلك في أكثره سبيل الارتجال فإنه لم يقل في كل القوافي، بل غادر القوافي الصعبة فلم يسلكها، واكتفى بالقول في الحروف الجيدة التي لا تقف أمام العزوبة والرقة والسرعة والارتجال. وقد جمع الكتاب بين دفتيه ديوان الشافعي الذي كان أفضل معبر عن الشافعي الإمام اللغوي المحدث المتصوف والشاعر.
