لم يُعرف أبو الطيب باللهو والمجون، ولم يُذكر له في تاريخه حوادث نسائية، من أمثال ما ذكر للشعراء والغزليين والمجانين، بل كانت حياته كلها من أولها إلى آخرها سلسلة مجاهدات، يرجو من ورائها أن يرضي مطالعه التي لا تقف عند حد.
من أجل ذلك شغل عن النساء واللهو بهنّ بما هو أكبر وأشق، كما أن حوادث الدهر وتقلبات الزمن - في نظره قد أخذت عليه المسالك، ولم تترك له من نفسه ما يلبي نداء الحب إذا دعاه.
ويلاحظ على شعر أبي الطيب في مجموعه روح الحزن والكآبة والإفراط في البكاء، وذكر الفراق والرحيل وشدة السقم والنحو: آمالاً مقطوعة، وآلاماً موصولة، فهو غزل لا تطير به النفس فرحاً.
وغزل شاعرنا يشبه، لما فيه من رنّة الأسى والأنين، غزل من جنوا بالفراق، ويلاحظ عليه أيضاً شيء من الجفوة والعنف أو الكبرياء والغطرسة أو التلميح إلى أنه هو الذي تسعى النساء إليه.
وما زاد على الشاعر غيظ منافسيه وحُساده أن شعره خلا، أو يكاد يخلو، من الغزل والتخنّث مخالفاً بذلك جمهرة الشعراء القدماء منهم والمحدثين، وأنه لم يكن متهالكاً على النساء شأنه شأن غيره من محبي الترف وأسارى الشهوة الجامحة.
كل ذلك كان ترفعاً عما درج عليه الناس من مألوف التغزل والمنادمة، وسموّاً بالشعر والفن إلى قنن الرجولة والبطولة؛ إن القطع الغزلية التي يصوغها - المتنبي - مقدمات لقصائده تدور على وصفه لشدة الوجد وأثره في المحب من سهم وسهاد وعناء وألم.
وفي ذلك الغزل تراه أيضاً محتفظاً بكرامته، صائناً لعزته، لا يذل في الشوق والهيام، ولا يتقرب إلى المرأة إلا من قبيل المجاملة، فلا ينزل به الغزل إلى الهوان الذي ينزل إليه ضعفاء الإرادة من المتغزلين.
هذا الكتاب يدرس موضوع المرأة والحب والغزل في شعر المتنبي وذلك في ثلاثة فصول: الفصل الأول: دور المرأة في المجتمع الإنساني، الفصل الثاني: ماهية الحب، الفصل الثالث: ما قاله المتنبي في المرأة والحب والغزل.
