يسعى هذا الكتاب إلى تقديم تصور أولي وبالخطوط العريضة عن بعض جوانب ما اصطلح عليه بــ"المشكلات العقلية الكبرى"، وهي مسائل المعرفة والنفس والألوهية (مع ما في التعبير من تسامح) والطبيعة، فيعرض للآراء التي توصلت إليها الحضارات الفلسفية البشرية في مختلف مراحلها حول كل واحدة من القضايا تلك، إبتداءً بالعهد الإغريقي الأول، ومروراً بالحضارة الإسكندرانية وآراء الفلاسفة الأوروبيين، وإنتهاءً بتحقيقات الفلاسفة المسلمين لا سيما الفيلسوف "صدر المتألهين محمد بن إبراهيم الشيرازي"، آخر مجدّدي الفلسفة الإسلامية والرجل الذي تدين له هذه الفلسفة بالشيء الكثير لما حقق لها من إنجازات لم يكن لأحد قدم السبق إليها.
إن المؤلف بعرضه هذا للقضايا المذكورة يقدم للقارئ عرضاً متكاملاً لكيفية تناول العقل الإنساني لكل من القضايا تلك، وهو إذ يتتبع السياقات الفكرية المختلفة ويستخلص منها وجهات النظر حول قضايا مشخصة، إنما يساهم في تكوين رؤية تاريخية متكاملة للحراك الفكري عند بني البشر، وهو جهد كبير يشكر الباحث على بذله.
