يتحدث جون بيركنز عن قصة تجنيده من قبل وكالة الأمن القومي الأميركية وعن تدريبه ليصبح قاتلاً إقتصادياً تحت غطاء شركة إستشارات هندسية أمريكية ضخمة أدخل فيها كخبير إقتصادي.
ذاع صيت جون بيركنز بعد أن اعترف بأنه كان قاتلاً من نوع خاص شارك في الإغتيال الإقتصادي لدول بأكملها، وبواسطة الرشوة والإبتزاز وحسب شهادته، فإذا ما حاول أحد الزعماء السياسيين رفض شروط التعاون ترسل الأجهزة الخاصة الأميركية عناصر خاصة تسمى بــ"الجاكلز" لتصفيته، مثلما حدث في بنما والأكوادور والسعودية، أو لتنظيم إنقلابات كما حدث في قطر وتركيا والباكستان.
كما يدور الحديث عن مهمته الأولى في إندونيسيا التي كانت بمثابة التعميد الميداني بالنسبة له في العالم الإسلامي ومهدت لمهماته القادمة في منطقة الخليج العربي حيث لم يتورّع عن إسخدام كل الوسائل المتاحة كالسيطرة على أسواق الأسهم والبورصات والفضائح الجنسية للملوك والأمراء والشيوخ ونسائهم وبناتهم لإخضاعهم وليجعلهم ينفذون أوامر الإدارة الأميركية بدون نقاش.
ظل بيركنز صامتاً قرابة عشرين عاماً وهو لا يتجرأ على نشر مذكراته خوفاً من التهديدات التي كان يتلقاها بإستمرار، وقد قبل رشوة كبيرة لقاء حفاظه على الصمت في مطلع الثمانينات، لكن بعد أحداث الحادي عشر من أيلول اتخذ قراراً حاسماً بإذاعة الحقيقة مما كانت العواقب، فانكب على تأليف كتابه بشغف دون أن يطلع أحداً من أقربائه وذويه حتى فرغ منه فأرسل عدة نسخ منه إلى عدة دور نشر لم تجرأ على نشره إلا واحدة.
وأخيراً خرج الكتاب إلى النور عام ألفين وأربعة، وسرعان ما أصبح الكتاب الأكثر مبيعاً، إضافة إلى أنه ترجم إلى ثلاثين لغة عالمية.
يعترف جون بيركنز صراحة بأن ثمة الكثير من أمثاله، وأن الإغتيال الإقتصادي للأمم أضحى عملاً روتينياً بالنسبة للولايات المتحدة، كما يذكر الكاتب أسماء القادة الذين كانوا من ضحاياه والبلدان التي أثار فيها عواصف إقتصادية عاتية، فمنها أمريكية لاتينية ومنها عربية.
