يعتبر "إميل دوركايم" المؤسس الحقيقى للعلوم الاجتماعية العلمية في بداية القرن العشرين، فقد أقام دعائمها على اسس متينة، وكون مدرسة فكرية هامة في علم الاجتماع لا تزال قائمة حتى اليوم جعلت من هذا العلم، علماً تكاملياً بعد أن حاولت ربط المواضيع الإنسانية المختلفة من أنثروبولوجية وجغرافية ودينية وسياسية واقتصادية ولغوية وفنية وقانونية ونفسية، بها. ويرجع إلى دوركايم الفضل في الوصول إلى استقلال علم الاجتماع عن بقية العلوم التي ألحق بها وفي تخليصه من الشوائب التي نسبت إليه.
ويمثل دوركايم نقطة تحول هامة في تاريخ الفكر الاجتماعي ونظرية علم الاجتماع وتشير مؤلفاته العظيمة على قدرته العقلية والفكرية في الجمع بين المنطق والفلسفة والطرق العلمية التي اعتمدت على استقراء الحوادث، والحقيقة أن ما تمتاز به أفكاره من عمق وأصالة على الرغم مما قد يكتنف بعضها من تناقضات، وعلى الرغم مما أشير إلى بعضها الآخر وخاصة في الفكر الاجتماعي العربي من انتقادات تستحق التوقف عندها والتعليق عليها، فإن مؤلفاته العديدة التي امتازت في جوانب كثيرة بأصالة الاستنتاج وصواب الحكم، جعلت منه مبدعاً لا مثيل له وفتحت الآفاق أمام منهج جديد وعلم جديد هو علم الاجتماع الذي رسم خطته وعمل على تنفيذها بعد أن حدد مواضيعها، مما يؤهله حمل شرف إنشاء هذا العلم.
ولما كان البناء الحالي لعلم الاجتماع يرجع للأنساق الفكرية التي صاغها رواد مبكرون من أمثال دوركايم الذين ساهموا في تدعيم مركز علم الاجتماع بين العلوم الأخرى فقد قصدنا تبيان الكيفية التي عالج فيها دوركايم مواد علم الاجتماع معالجة موضوعية، كما حاولنا الكشف عن الانعكاسات التي تركها في هذا العلم محاولين عرض آرائه وتبسيط أفكاره وتبسيط أفكاره وتحليلها ومناقشتها ومحاكمتها مع تدعيمها بالآراء المؤيدين والمعارضين من الاجتماعيين العرب، ذلك أن الدراسة التحليلية للأفكار الأساسية التي سطرها كبار الرواد في ميدان علم الاجتماع جديرة بأن تجعلنا نتتبع نمو العلم والتعرف على تطور نظرياته والوقوف على منابعه الخلاقة ومصادره الأساسية مما يفتح أمام هذا العلم مجالات التجديد والابتكار.
