يعتبر محيي الدين صبحي من أبرز المفكرين والنقاد العرب الذين ظهروا في النصف الثاني من القرن العشرين. كان واسع المعرفة، بعيد الرؤية، عميق التحليل، وموضوعي الرأي.
ترك آثاراً أدبية وفكرية كثيرة ومتنوعة، من أبرزها دراسات جمالية نقدية تعتبر من أهم المراجع في دراسة آثار كبار الشعراء العرب قدماء ومحدثين.
كان هذا الكتاب من أواخر الكتب التي وضعها محيي الدين صبحي في النقد الأدبي قبل رحيله، وفيه دراسة نقدية لأربعة دواوين أصدرها الشاعر جوزف حرب ما قبل 1996 وهي: "شجرة الأكاسيا"، "الخصر المزمار"، "مقص الحبر" (في المحكية اللبنانية)، و"مملكة الخبز والورد" الذي قال بصاحبه: "كنت أتمنى لو أن النقد الأدبي لم يتطور ولم يتشعب في مساربه المتعددة. إذا لقلت لجوزف حر: أنت في ديوانك "مملكة الخبز والورد" أشعر العرب. فإن غلوت قلت له: أنت أشعر الإنس والجن في أيامنا هذه، وإن تحفظت قلت عنه: هو أشعر أهل عصره".
