هذا الكتاب تعليق لي على "خاتم النييلونج" أهم مؤلفات ريتشارد فاجنر أقدمه إلى أولئك المعجبين والمتحمسين له حتى وإن لم يستطيعوا متابعة بعض أفكاره أو إدراك معضلة درامية يثيرها مثل معضلة "فوتان"، او يجدون آراء الإله فوتان مملة غير مفهومة. إن التفاني في التعصب لفاجنر- كما يتفاني الكلب في الوفاء لسيده- والاجتزاء باستيعاب القليل فحسب من أفكاره الأولية والقليل من احساساته وعواطفه ثم الإنحناء تسليما بعظمته دون فهم جوهر هذه العظمة كل هذا ليس من الفاجنرية الحقة في شئ ،ولن يتطور هذا الوضع إلى ما هو أحسن ما لم تكن هناك حصيلة من الأفكارالمشتركة لدى الأستاذ والمريدين، وكل ما أرمى إليه من هذا الكتاب هو أن أنشر الآراء التى قد يكون الإنجليزي العادي في حاجة إليها ليستكمل بها ثقافته، ولقد جهدت في تحصيل هذه الآراء بنفسي مثلما فعل فاجنر، لما كنت أعتقد أنني وحدى النتاج المستنير لهذا الجمع فإني أجرؤ دون حرج على أن أضيف توضيحي هذا إلى ما سبق أن كتبه غيري من موسيقيين ليسوا ثوار أوما كتبه ثوار ليسوا موسيقيين.
