دخلت الكتابة بظهور الإسلام مرحلة جديدة من مراحله التطورية، بعد أن حظيت بإهتمام شديد من قبل المسلمين، وإنطلاقاً من القرن الثاني للهجرة بدأت تنضج الأشكال والقواعد الجمالية للخطوط العربية، والتي تتجلى في تصاميم مضبوطة.
وكان لإستخدام الزخارف النباتية على الحروف العربية والذي لم يعرفه أي خط أو شعب من شعوب العالم، لهو أمر بالغ الدلالة، وذلك لإهتمام الفنان المسلم به بعد أن اكتشف القابلية الشديدة التي فاق بها خطوط الشعوب الأخرى للتطور الزخرفي، فأضاف التوريقات النباتية، والذي اعتمد وبشكل مميز على الخط الكوفي بسبب خطوطه المستقيمة التي يتميز بها هذا الخط.
وتستعرض هذه الدراسة الزخارف الخطية في المخطوطات العربية منذ بدايتها وكيفية تطورها وإزدهارها وما تحمل من جماليات كبيرة، حيث كانت مجالاً خصباً لإظهار براعة الفنان المسلم، وتلك الثروة الفنية التي تكتنزها المخطوطات وخاصة المصاحف الشريفة وما تحتويه من فنون في مجال الخط والزخرفة والتذهيب، مما تثري الدراسات الأثرية من خلال تنوع أشكال الزخارف الإسلامية والتي كان أهمها الزخارف الخطية وأشكالها المستخدمة في أسلوب فني جديد والمبادئ الفنية التي اعتمدها في تنفيذها مع أنماط الخطوط فيها ومدى تلاحمه وتوافقه مع العناصر الزخرفية الأخرى، مما شجع الباحث على دراسة هذا الموضوع وتغطيته بالمعلومات العلمية والفنية.
