لكل امرئ من دهره ما تعود ومضت نفسي وهي عازمة على الجهاد في سبيل ما هامت به صامتة، فكان سكوتها تشديداً لعزيمتي ونسيان ما لاقيته في رحلتي الأولى إلى الأقطار العربية، فقلت: رحلة واحدة قليلة في تاريخ كاتب، إذن، لنرحل رحلة أخرى إلى أميركا لتأليف كتاب عنها، وعن مغتربينا فيها فسرت رحالة على طريق شاق، بهمّة لا تعرف الكلل والملل، متحملاً الأسفار التي لا يتحملها قبلي أحد حتى ولا ابن بطوطة لأن أيام ذلك الرحالة كانت هنيئة العيش بعيدة عن المادة قريبة إلى الصوفية، والأدب وأيامب هذه بعيدة عن كل ذلك.
كلّ ما عنيت من الآلام وكل ما صرفت من الدراهم في سبيل تأليف كتابي هذا لم يهن همتي ولم يقف في طريقي أكثر مما وهنها ووقف في طريقها، وحزّ في نفسي قول بعض مواطنينا: عسى أنك توفقت مادياً، وعسى أن فلاناً اشترك في كتابك، وإن شاء الله زيد ساعدك، ولا تقل إني أنا أخبرتك عن عنوان فلان ولا تقل له أنني ذكرت لك أسمه، هذا عدا عن معظم أسفاري التي منها ما استغرق 18 ساعة ومنها ما استغرق 25 في سيارات عمومية على طريق غير معبدة يعفر وجه الركاب التراب كلما مرت بسيارتي أخرى، وعدا عن أمراضي وهي ثلاثة إحداها في (كوبا) كانت الحمى تلهب جسدي وكان بيني وبين الموت بضع دقائق، وأخيراً، عن سفري بالقطارات 50 مرة وبالطيارات 100 مرة، وبالسيارات العمومية والخصوصية نحو ألف مرة، ولم يدفعني إلى الصمود أمام هذه الأسفار إلاّ ما يختلج في نفسي من قوة الإرادة، فقلت مع المتنبي: "وإذا كانت النفوس كباراً... تعبت في مرادها الأجسام".
ولا أقول هذا القول لأتبجح، أكثر مما أقوله عن عنادي لتأليف هذا الكتاب الذي كلفني نحو ست سنوات تنقيباً وتحقيقاً وأسفاراً وتحبيراً حتى أصدرته وها هو بين يديك أخي القارئ، إذ ترى فيه رصف البلاد الأميركية التي زرتها وهي 28، وتحليل نفسية سكانها وعاداتهم وعدد أنفسهم وتاريخ إغتراب أبناء وطني، وشيئاً عن جمعياتهم ونواديهم وقصصاً واقعية، فإليك يا أخي القارئ وحدك، أهدي هذا الكتاب دون سواك، لأني أعلم أنك ستكون شريكي فيما قاسيت من الآلام لتأليفه.
