إذا كان الطفل مرأة المجتمع، كما يقول علماء النفس، فإن المجتمع ينمو وتطور بوجود طفولة سليمة، تحمل أهداف المجتمع وقيمه للعبور إلى مستقبل مشرق، ومن المعلوم أن مرحلة الطفولة ذات أهمية كبرى في تكوين شخصية الفرد، ذلك لان فيها توضع البذور الأولى لشخصيته، فعلى ضوء ما يلقى الفرد من خبرات في مرحلة الطفولة يتحدد إطار شخصيته، فإذا كانت تلك الخبرات مؤاتية وسوية وسارة يشب رجلاً سوياً متكيفاً مع نفسه، ومع المجتمع الذي يحيط به، وإن كانت خبرات مؤلمة مريرة، فإنها تترك أثاراً ضارة في شخصيته.
إن خبرات الطفولة تحفر جذورها عميقة في شخصية الطفل، لأنه ما زال كائناً قابلاً للتشكيل والصقل، وعلى ذلك ينبغي الإهتمام بهذه المرحلة على وجه الخصوص، وتوفير البيئة الصحية للطفل، وتقديم الرعاية النفسية اللازمة له، والعمل على إشباع حاجاته، وحمايته من التوتر والقلق والخوف والغيرة والغضب... ومعاملته معاملة حسنة، على أساس من الفهم العميق لدوافعه وإنفعالاته وأحاسيسه.
ومهما يكن فإن عملية التربية ليست بالأمر اليسير، لأنها تتطلب الكثير من الوعي التربوي والنفسي لدى الآباء ولدى المربين، لأن الطفل يتعرض لكثير من المشكلات والأزمات النفسية.
