يحاول الإمام شرف الدين، " أبو محمد عبد المؤمن بن خلف ابن أبي الحسن الدمياطي" في هذا الكتاب جمع سيرة أزواج النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ضمن توجه معين يرمي إلى تبيين فضائلهن، رضي الله عنهن، داخل الأطر الشرعية، من تنزيل وأحاديث، التي تنظم العلاقة الاجتماعية داخل الأسرة. وأسلوبه في ذلك الاعتماد على مصادر مسماة تتخللها شواهد مستقاة من المصادر، ومناقشات لبعض الأخبار الضعيفة التي تتعدد فيها الروايات. ويلجأ الدمياطي إلى تعابير خاصة، مثل قوله: وأصحابنا، وأقول. فيما يعتمد أثناء تقديمه الروايات إلى إسنادها مباشرة مثل قوله: هذا قول ابن سعد، أو قاله ابن سعد. أما الأخبار التي تفتقر إلى بعض التوثيق فيرفقها عادة بقوله: فقيل. كل ذلك يرتبط برغبة الدمياطي في تقديم الخبر الصحيح استنادا إلى ما طلع عليه من مصادره. ويبدو أن الدمياطي يعتمد إلى بعد كبير على رواية ابن سعد في (الطبقات الكبرى)، بل نراه يعمد إلى فقرات كاملة يقتبسها منه بشكل يكاد يكون حرفياً غالباً. ويمكن تلخيص أهم أغراض الدمياطي في سيرته لأزواج النبي بما يلي: رفض الانكحة الفاسدة التي كان عليها أهل الجاهلية، تكريم شهداء الإسلام ورجال الصحابة الذين سقطوا دفاعا عن الدعوة. تحريم الزواج من الأختين في آن واحد، وتحريم زواج الأخوات من الرضاعة ومن أبنائهم وبناتهن. التأكيد على وجود عدد من النساء اللواتي عرضن أنفسهن على الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم للزواج من النبي طمعاً في ما تحلى به من شرف النبوة.
