كان موضوع "أزواج الرسول" موضوعاً شائقاً، كتب فيه الكثيرون من العلماء والباحثين قديماً وحديثاً. وهذا الموضوع هو من أهم المواضيع الدينية والتاريخية والحضارية في آن معاً. وهكذا تناوله المؤرخون، والفقهاء والمحدثون، والمفسرون والاخباريون وغيرهم. وكتبوا فيه كتباً يصعب إحصاؤها. ولقد آثر مؤلف هذا الكتاب أن يكتفي فيه بنقل ما كتبه في هذا الموضوع كل أبي عبيدة معمر بن المثنى في كتابه "أزواج النبي وأولاده"، والإمام شرف الدين أبي محمد عبد المؤمن بن خلف بن أبي الحسن الدمياطي في كتابه "نساء رسول الله وأولاده ومن سالفه من قريش وحلفائهم وغيرهم" مبوباً الكتاب ضمن خمسة أبواب على النحو التالي: 1-أزواج النبي المدخول بهن. 2-من تزوجهن رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وسلم) ولم يدخل بهن. 3-من خطبهن ولم يتفق تزويجهن. 4-سرارية.
