انتشر في هذه المسألة قولان متباينان، قول يجعل من آحادية الخبر ونزوله عن رتبة التواتر باباً يُتَوصّل به إلى الإنكار أو التكذيب أو التشكيك، ويقابله قولٌ لا يرضى بغير وجوب الإعتقاد بما تضمنه خبر الآحاد، ونشأ عن إنتشار هذين القولين في عصرنا غَلَط في فهم موقف أهل السنة من هذه المسألة، ونَبَتَ من هذا الغلط إتهاماتٌ وتشويه للمذهب الوسطي العلمي الذي ارتضاه أهل السنة في التعامل مع خبر الآحاد.
صحيحٌ أن الوسطية موقع نسبي بين الغالين، لكنّ إدعاء الوسطية اليوم يُسمع من كل فريق، فمن يصدق هذه الدعوى بما تتطلبه الوسطية من معانقة الدليل والتجرد للحق والتنزه عن علائق النفس وحظوظها؟...
هذه الوسطية التي تستغني بعرص حججها العقلية والنقلية عن الخطابيات والعواطف، هذه الوسطية التي تستغني في نقض شبه المخالفين بالعقل والنقل عن معاول التكفير والتبديع والتضليل، هذه هي الوسطية التي يمكن أن توحّد الصف وتقطع دابر التنازع والتناحر في هذه المسألة، وبين يدي كل متعطش لمعرفة الحق، وكل متجرد للنظر في الأدلة، أقدم البحث في هذه المسألة تاركاً له الحكم على بصيرة والإختيار بعد قناعة.
