هذا الكتاب الضخم هو الجزء الأول من شبه موسوعة، أطلق عليها مؤلفها اسم "مسيرة المسرح في مصر"، سوف تصدر في عدة أجزاء. وهذا الجزء يعتبر إنجازاً كبيراً، وبصمة بارزة في إنتاج الدكتور سيد علي إسماعيل، الذي يأتي إلينا باكتشافات مجهولة خطيرة، يعتمد فيها على الوثائق والمخطوطات النادرة.
وفي هذا الجزء، نتعرف على مسيرة الفرق الغنائية المسرحية في مصر، منذ عام 1900 إلى عام 1935. وقد قسمها المؤلف إلى عدة أقسام. فمنها الفرق الكبرى، مثل فرقة الشيخ سلامة حجازي، وفرقة أولاد عكاشة، وفرقة منيرة المهدية. أما الفرق الصغرى، فمنها فرقة الشيخ احمد الشامي، وفرقة الشيخ سيد درويش، وفرقة فكتوريا موسى. أما الفرق المغمورة فكانت فرق الصالات الغنائية، أمثال بديعة مصابني، وببا عز الدين، ورتيبة وأنصاف رشدي.
