يعتبر جحا من أطرف الشخصيات الفكاهية العالمية على مر الدهور والأزمان وينتمي إلى قبيلة فزارة العربية، عاشت في القرن الأول الهجري أي في العصر الأموي، وإسمه دجين بن ثابت ولقبه جحا. لقد كان خارق الذكاء، ذكياً، يلبس لكل حالة لبوسها، عاق في طفولته، أصلع في كهولته، فقير الحال، ينتقل من مكان إلى آخر يتكسب من وعظه، ومن خلال نوادره في القضاء. نعرف أنه عاش مرحلة غاب عنها القانون، واضطربت فيها الأحوال، وفُقدت العدالة بين الناس. من هنا جاء هذا الكتاب ليجمع إلى جانب لذة الإبتسامة متعة الفائدة الأدبية والتاريخية والثقافية التي ميّزت ذلك العصر.
