عندما جاء هيرودوت إلى مصر في القرن الخامس قبل الميلاد، وصف المصريين بأنهم أكثر الشعوب العالم تديناً. ولعل المعابد الهائلة التي تمتد آثارها على طول وادي النيل خير شهادة على مدى التغلغل العاطفة الدينية في أفئدة المصريين القدماء. وعلى جدران تلك المعابد تطالعنا صور حشود هائلة من الأرباب الذين صوروا في هيئات عجيبة تجمع بين رؤوس الحيوانات والأجسام البشرية. وكانت تلك الصفات الحيوانية رموزاً لقوى معينة أو صفات لتلك الأرباب، وليست في الغالب تقديساً لنوع معين من الحيوانات. وقد وضع المصريون أساطير تشرح كيفية خلق العالم، كما آمنوا بوجود حياة أخره ممتدة بعد الموت، وأن مصير الروح الخيرة هي إلى جنة الفردوس التي تخيلوها تارة أخرى جزيرة أسطورية حافلة بكل ما لذ وطاب، وتارة أخرى في صورة روحانية تتجرد فيها الروح من الملذات الدنيوية وتنعم باللذة الروحية. وهذا الكتاب على صغره يقدم للقارئ مدخلاً طريفاً شائقاً للتعرف على تلك الديانة القديمة ومعبوداتها. وسوف يدهش فيه لسمو الديانة المصرية القديمة ونبل أفكارها، رغم أنها لم يكن بالديانة السماوية المنزلة.
