كان هذا التساؤل منطلقاً لإدوارد دوبونو، وهو واحد من أبرز الثقاة المتخصصين فى دراسات آليات التفكير للذهن البشري، فى القرن العشرين، فشرع فى إجراء دراسة شائقة أساسها تجربة عملية بسيطة نفذها على نحو ألف شخص، حيث ترك أسطوانة سوداء تسقط أمامهم، ثم ترك لهم حرية استنتاج السبب وراء سقوط تلك الأسطوانة. ومن خلال تلك التجربة البسيطة استطاع أن يتوصل إلى وجود أربع طرائق رئيسية تؤدي إلى الوقوع فى سوء الفهم.
وقراءة هذا الكتاب هامة ومفيدة، لأنها توضح للمرء السبيل إلى محاولة الفهم الصحيح، وتجنبه الوقوع فى خطأ سوء الفهم والتمسك بالرأى باعتباره الصحيح الأوحد، وهى العلة فى عصرنا وراء شيوع التيارات والأيديولوجيات الفكرية المتزمتة التى تفترض لنفسها وحدها امتلاك سر الحقيقة المطلقة.
