يقول مصنف الكتاب بأن صناعة الصيدلية هي من أشرف الصنائع بعد صناعة الطب، أو هي آلة لصناعة الطب التي موضوعها النظر في بدن الإنسان من حيث حفظ صحته إن كانت موجودة أو ردّها إن كانت مفقودة، وذلك إنما يكون بالأدوية المفردة والمركبة والأغذية المألوفة.
ولذا قصد تأليف هذا الكتاب الذي جمع فيه ما ورد في أمهات كتب زمانه التي صنفت في هذا المجال كالإرشاد، والملكي، والمنهاج، وأقرباذي ابن التلميذ، والدستور وغير ذلك من كتب الطب النفيسة مضيفاً في كتابه هذا ما نقله عن الثقات من العشابين ومما امتحنه وجربه بيده أو أخذه عن ثقة جرّبه من امتحان الأدوية المفردة والمركبة، ومما نقله عن مشايخ عاصرهم ثقات مشتغلين بهذه الصناعة الجليلة، ولقبه: بـ"منهاج الدكان ودستور الأعيان" ذاكراً فيه الأشربة وطبخها والربوب والمربيات وتربيتها، والسفوفات ودقها والشيافات والأكمال وكيفية تصويلها، والمراهم وطبخها ووصايا ينتفع بها في اتخاذ الأدوية المفردة ومتى تجنى والأوعية التي توضع فيها وما يفسدها فيتوقى منها، وما يصلحها فيعتمد، وكيفية استدراك ما بدا فيه الفساد، جاعلاً كل ذلك ضمن أبواب لتكون مادة كتابه معيناً لطالبه وسهلاً لمن يسترشد به.
