هناك محاولات حثيثة في ميدان تكنولوجيا التعليم لإيجاد الوسائل التعليمية التي تحقق أهداف كل تخصص من التخصصات الأكاديمية والتربية الفنية من التخصصات الأكاديمية التي تنفرد بأهداف تعليمية خاصة، فضلاً عن أنها تشارك المواد الدراسية الأخرى في تحقيق الأهداف التربوية العامة، والأهداف التعليمية الخاصة بالتربية الفنية تتجه تنمية القدرة على الإدراك أو الإبداع أو التذوق، وتستمد معظم الأهداف التعليمية في دروس التربية الفنية من هذه القدرات الثلاث مهما اختلفت الصياغات وتعددت.
وهذه نتيجة توصل إليها المؤلف في بحثه للماجستير، وكان معنى التوصل إلى تحديد الأهداف التعليمية للتربية الفنية أن الطريف قد اتضح تماما لتحدي الوسائل التعليمية التي تحقق هذه الأهداف وبالرغم من هذا الوضوح فإن المعلم لا يزال يواجه المشكلات في تحديد الوسائل التعليمية، وذلك لعدم وجود قائمة بهذه الوسائل تبين أنواعها وتفريعاتها.
ومن هنا فإن المؤلف قام ببحث آخر حول نماذج تصنيف الوسائل التعليمية توصل منه إلى قائمة معيارية تضم ثلاثين نوعاً من الوسائل التعليمية ، ومائة وواحد وسيلة تعليمية مشتقة منها، وهذه القائمة مرتبة تنازلياً حسب عدد مرات ورود كل وسيلة في نماذج تصنيف الوسائل التعليمية.
وبعد التوصل إلى هذه القائمة أصبح أمام معلم التربية الفنية مصفوفة من الأهداف ومصفوفة أخرى من الوسائل التعليمية وعليه أن ينشط في أخيار وسائله أي أن يقوم بإعادة ترتيب قائمة الوسائل التعليمية كلما غير في صياغة أهدافه، وهذه هي أبرز نقطة في هذا الكتاب وهي التي اتضحت في الفصلين الأول والثاني، وتناول الفصل الثالث نظرية الاتصال في التعليم واتجهن الفصول الباقية لتفسير الوسائل التعليمية الأكثر ارتباطاً بالتربية الفنية وبدروس اكتساب المهارات والعروض العملية والتجارب الأدائية، كما تعرض الكتاب لعينات من نتائج دروس التربية الفنية مقارنة بالوسائل التعليمية المستخدمة في تدريسها.
