لا يختلف اثنان من المسلمين في أن كيفية تحديد دخول شهر رمضان وانتهائه من وظيفة الفقهاء وشغل العلماء وأنهم المرجع في ذلك.
وقد اتفق علماء المذاهب الأربعة على أن الأصل في تحديد أول رمضان هو التالي: يراقب الهلال بعد غروب شمس التاسع والعشرين شعبان فإن رئى الهلال كان اليوم التالي أول رمضان، وإن لم ير الهلال يكون اليوم التالي الثلاثين من شعبان والذي بعده هو أول أيام رمضان.
على ذلك درج المسلمون في كل بلاد الدنيا, وبذلك أفتى الفقهاء ونصوا أن العمدة على هذا وأنه لا التفات إلى أقوال أهل الحساب والفلكيين ولا عبرة بكلامهم لتحديد ابتداء الصيام أو انتهائه.
ولأن النصيحة واجبة للمسلمين، والأمر بالمعروض شعار المتقين، فقد أراد كل من الأستاذ "رياض الناشف" والشيخ "سمير القاضي" توضيح هذه المسألة والتأكيد على وجوب الاعتماد في صوم رمضان، على رؤية هلال رمضان أو استكمال ثلاثين من شعبان، على أن كل مسلم لم يتمسك بما قاله فقهاء المذاهب الأربعة الذين أجمعن الأمة على علو شانهم، وأن يدرس أحكام الصيام قبل دخول شهر رمضان. وفي إطار حديثهما عن هذا الموضوع سلط الباحثان الضوء على كم كبير من الأحاديث النبوية التي جاءت حول هذا الموضوع، كما وبينا السبب الكامن من خلف ادعاء المنجمين والفلكين بالمعرفة والعلم في هذا الموضوع.
