يقدم الكتاب الذي بين يديك نظرة شاملة على الوضع المؤسف لحرية التعبير بالنسبة لموظفي القطاعين العام والخاص في المجتمع الأمريكي؛ فيعرض "بروس باري" -مؤلف الكتاب- لحقيقة أن معظم الأمريكيين يتم إجبارهم على التخلي عن حقوقهم المدنية، وبالأخص حقهم في التعبير عن الرأي بحرية تامة في مكان العمل؛ الأمر الذي يؤدي إلى عواقب وخيمة بالنسبة للأفراد وأصحاب العمل والمجتمع المدني بأكمله.
ويوضح "باري" كيف يضيق كل من القانون والممارسات الإدارية الخناق على حرية التعبير في العمل، ولماذا يلجأ أصحاب العمل إلى الخيارات القمعية، وما الذي يمكن للموظفين القيام به لحماية أنفسهم. ويوضح "باري" أيضاً أن حقوق الموظفين ليست هي التي تتضاءل فقط، وإنما أيضاً تأثير الأفراد كمواطنين في مجتمعهم؛ أي كمشاركين في المحادثات المدنية التي تشكل الممارسة الديمقراطية.
