يحتل الهاتف المحمول اليوم مكانة هامة في حياتنا المعاصرة، فقد أحدث هذا الجهاز الصغير ثورة في وسائل الإتصال؛ إذ غير من طرائق التواصل وعاداته بين الأفراد والجماعات.
وقد كانت سنوات التسعينيات حاسمة في شيوع الهاتف المحمول وإزدياد شعبيته بحيث أصبح في زمن قياسي وسيلة الإتصال الأكثر إستعمالاً على الصعيد العالمي.
ويكفي أن نُذكِّر بأنه في سنة 2000 تم إرسال وإستقبال حوالي 17 مليار رسالة قصيرة (SMS)، وفي السنة التي تلتها تضاعف هذا العدد مرات ومرات ليصل إلى 250 مليار رسالة، وفي سنة 2008 تجاوز هذا العدد 2 بليون رسالة قصيرة.
واليوم، فإن حوالي 75% من سكان العالم يمتلكون هاتفاً محمولاً وفق إحصائيات البنك الدولي لسنة 2012؛ أي حوالي 6 مليار شخص.
وإذا كانت للهاتف المحمول رهانات إقتصادية وقانونية وإجتماعية وصحية وثقافية ضخمة في مجتمعاتنا المعاصرة، فإن له، أيضاً، رهانات وتحديات لغوية على اللغات التي ليست منخرطة فعليا اليوم في دينامية الإختراعات التكنولوجية المعاصرة، ومن ضمنها تكنولوجيا المعلومات والإتصال، إلخ.
وتتمثل هذه التحديات، أساساً، في الكم الهائل من المصطلحات والمفاهيم التي يجب التعامل معها ونقلها من الإنجليزية بإعتبارها اللغة الأصلية لهذه العلوم والمعارف الجديدة.
وهكذا، يعد هذا المعجم الثلاثي (إنجليزي، فرنسي، عربي) تحدياً لغوياً جديداً ترفعه اللغة العربية لمواكبة هذا السيل الجارف لمفاهيم ومصطلحات تكنولوجيا المعلومات بمضامينها الدقيقة وخصوصيتها اللغوية والمعرفية، من جهة، وتقريبها إلى عموم الباحثين، والمختصين، والطلبة والمحررين التقنيين، ووسطاء الإعلام والإتصال من جهة أخرى، الذين يواجهون يومياً مشاكل ترجمة المصطلحات والبحث عن متكافئات عربية لمصطلحات أجنبية.
