يعدَ كتاب "الجمع بين رأيي الحكيمين أفلاطون وأرسطو" من أهم ما وضعه أبو نصر الفارابي في الفلسفة من كتب ومصنفات، لأنه عني فيه بتسليط الضوء- من خلال الجمع بين رأيي هذين الحكيمين- على أهم مبادئ الفلسفة اليونانية التي أُعزم بها، وبذل لها الكثير من الوقت والجهد.
وقبل الشروع في الجمع بين رأيي الحكيمين، والتقريب بين مذهبيهما في المسائل التي إختارها موضوعاً للبحث والمقارنة، عرَف الفارابي بالفلسفة: حدَاً وماهيَة، وأشار إلى أن أفلاطون وأرسطو هما اللذان أبدعاها، وأنشأ أوائلها وأصولها، ثم تحدَث عن صناعة الفلسفة، وعرَج أبو نصر على سيرتي الرجلين، بعد ذلك، بدأ أبو نصر بدراسته المقارنة، فحاول التوفيق أولاً بين منهجي الحكيمين، فقال: إنهما مختلفان في الظاهر، ومتفقان في الغاية. أما المسألة الأخيرة التي جهد الفارابي في الجمع بها بين الرجلين فهي مسألة الثواب والعقاب في الحياة الآخرة.
