ما هو النظر إلى الرأسمالية كنظام تاريخي، على مدى كل تاريخها، وفي واقع فريد ملموس؟ لقد وضعت أمامي مهمة أن أصف هذا الواقع، وأن أرسم بالتحديد ما كان يتغير باستمرار وما لم يتغير إطلاقاً.
فالرأسمالية هي في المقام الأول نظام اجتماعي تاريخي، وعلينا لكي ما نفهم أصولها أو فعلها أو آفاقها الحالية أن ننظر إلى واقعها القائم، وبالطبع قد نحاول أن نلخص هذا الواقع في مجموعة من القضايا المجردة، لكن من الحماقة أن نستخدم مثل هذه التجريدات في الحكم على الواقع وتصنيفه. ومن هنا فإنني أقترح بدلاً من ذلك أن نصنف ماذا كانت عليه الرأسمالية فعلاً في الممارسة، وكيف عملت كنظام، ولماذا تطورت بالطرق التي تطورت بها، وإلى أين تمضي حالياً؟
إن الرأسمالية التاريخية أبعد من أن تكون نظاماً "طبيعياً" كما حاول بعض المدافعين عنها عادة أن يقولوا بل هي نظام واضح الحماقة، فالمرء يراكم رأس المال من أجل أن يراكم مزيداً من رأس المال، والرأسماليون أشبه بالفئران البيضاء، في أنها تجري أسرع من أجل أن تجري أسرع وأسرع. ولا شك أن بعض الناس-خلال العملية-يعيشون أفضل، لكن آخرين يعيشون عيشة بائسة، وحتى من يعيشون أفضل فإلى أي حد هم أفضل؟ ولأي مدى؟
