هكذا قالت الشجرة لليلى يومًا ما، وسط عالم صامت من الصم والبكم، مُنعت فيه لغة الإشارة والكتابة والنسخ، وصارت الكلمة جريمة يعاقب عليها القانون، في حين تُوفّر الدولة بطاقات رسمية مختومة يمكن للناس التواصل من خلالها، ومن خلالها فقط.
في هذا العالم وُلدت ليلى، ولم يكن يخطر لها على بال أن تلك الشجرة سوف تُغيّر مجرى حياتها بالكامل، أنها ستفتح أمامها بوابة سحرية على جمال الحياة وقبحها في آن. لقد غرقت تمامًا في سحر الكلمة، بعد أن انقرضت الكلمات وصارت ذكرى من الزمن القديم. ولقد أوصلها هذا السحر في النهاية إلى الوجه العاري للحقيقة، الوجه المستتر خلف حجب الصمت المحكم.
