بدأ الأمر بمحاولة انتحار.
فعلياً، كان مجرد إعلان شروع في انتحار.
قطعاً، ليست هذه البداية الصحيحة لهذه الرواية، لكنني لست روائياً يجيد اختيار البدايات، ولم يخطر لي، يوماً، وأنا أقرأ رواياتي المفضّلة، وهي ليست كثيرة، بأنني سأجلس أمام حاسوبي، لكي أروي، بإصبع واحدة، هذه الأحداث.
ولا بأس من الاعتراف بأنني لا أجد متعة في دخول العمارات من بواباتها الرئيسة الوسيعة.
سأبحث، دائماً، عن مدخل خلفي أتسلّل منه إلى روايتي، منتشياً بالفرادة والوحشة، ومسجّلاً بطولة وهمية تضلّل مزاجي الكسول، وتدفعني لإكمال الصعود على سلالم الحريق، من طابق إلى طابق أعلى، لكي أصل إلى تلك النار المشتهاة وأتحوّل إلى غيمة ماطرة تليق بالنهايات السعيدة.
غير أن العمارات المزوّدة بسلالم حريق في مدينة مثل بيروت غير موجودة على الإطلاق. إنه تفصيل معماري أوروبي لم يكترث له البنّاؤون في مدينة ريفية متوسطية مسحورة بالطراز الغربي، لكنها لحظة اندلاع الحرائق لا تهرع الى السلالم الخلفية، بل تقفز من الشرفات.
في النهاية، بدأ الأمر من حيث لا أتوقع، حين قررت سميّة البقاعي أن تنهي حياتها. كتبت على حائطها الإلكتروني: هذا آخر نداء استغاثة! واختفت.
