تعتبر العملية التعليمية من أهم، وأصعب المهام، لأنها تهتم بإرسال المعلومات، ليفهمها المتعلم مع أسلوب جيد، وكثير من الطلاب يقولون إن مدرسهم جيد في التعليم، لكنَّه ذا معاملة سيئة، وهناك معلم بعكس ذلك تماماً.
كما تكمن أهمية الوسائل، والبرامج التعليمية عند الأطفال، من خلال بناء، وتجسيد المفاهيم، والقيم المجردة، فالرموز اللفظية التي يتم تلقينها للأطفال من قبل المعلم، التي تعتبر لهم مفاهيم مجردة، لا معنى لها، وبعيدة عن الواقع، والمحسوس، وتنمية الرغبة، والإهتمام لتعلم المادة التعليمية، وزيادة إنتباه الأطفال، وقطع رتابة المواقف التعليمية، تقليص الفروق الفردية، التغلب على البعدين الزماني، والمكاني، المساعدة على تذكر المعلومات، وإدراكها خصوصاً عند إستخدام السمع، والبصر، تقديم حلول لمشكلات التعليم المعاصر، توفير إمكانية تعلم الظواهر الخطرة، والنادرة.
كذلك يمكن للوسائل التعليمية، أن تلعب دوراً هاماً في النظام التعليمي، ورغم أن هذا الدور أكثر وضوحاً في المجتمعات التي نشأ فيها هذا العلم، كما يدل على ذلك النمو المفاهيمي للمجال من جهة، والمساهمات العديدة لتقنية التعليم في برامج التعليم، والتدريب، كما تشير إلى ذكر أدبيات المجال، إلا أن هذا الدور في مجتمعاتنا العربية عموماً لا يتعدى الإستخدام التقليدي لبعض الوسائل، إن وجدت، دون التأثير المباشر في عملية التعلم، وإفتقاد هذا الإستخدام للأسلوب النظامي الذي يؤكد عليه المفهوم المعاصر لتقنية التعليم.
