هذا كتاب ذكر الحروف التي توقعها العرب على المعاني المتضادة فيكون الحرف منها مؤدياً عن معنيين مختلفين ويظن أهل البدع والزيغ والإزراء بالعرب أن ذلك كان منهم لنقصان حكمتهم وقلة بلاغتهم وكثرة الالتباس في محاوراتهم عند اتصال مخاطباتهم فيسألون عن ذلك ويحتجون بأن الاسم منبئ عن المعنى الذي تحته ودال عليه وموضح تأويله، فإذا اعتور اللفظة الواحدة معنيان مختلفان لم يعرف المخاطب أيهما أراد المخاطب، وبطل بذلك معنى تعليق الاسم على المسمى.
فأجيبوا عن هذا الرأي الذي ظنوه وسألوا عنه بضروب من الأجوبة.
