يُعد هذا الكتاب من أهم مؤلفات لاري لودان ؛فقد اهتم لودان بقضايا فلسفة العلم المعاصرة ،وعلى رأسها قضية التقدم ،وبصفة خاصة تقدم العلم ، وتقدم المعرفة العلمية ؛فالكتاب الذى بين أيدينا يقدم صاحبه رؤية عن نمو العلم وتقدمه تختلف إلى حد كبير عن الرؤى المعاصرة التي قدمها فلاسفة العلم المعاصرون أمثال :كارل بوبر وتوماس كون ،وكارناب وإمري لاكاتوش وهانسن ،وفيرآبند وغيرهم ؛فيتخلى لودان عن اللغة التقليدية في معالجة الموضوع ،وعن بعض المفاهيم التي طرحتها هذه المعالجات ؛ ليثبت ان التقدم لا يتم من خلال التأييد أو التكذيب ،أو التعزيز ،أو التبرير..إلخ؛ فيقدم منظوراً آخر للمعرفة العلمية يحاول من خلاله تتبع نتائج الرأى القائل بأن العلم يهدف أساساً إلى حل -مشكلة .وبرغم أن هذا الراى يعد مألوفا ومنتشراً ،فان لودان يرى أنه لم يلق سوى درجة ضئيلة جداً من الانتباه ؛لذا فإنه في كتابه هذا يتساءل :ماأنواع المشكلات ؟ ماالذى يجعل مشكلة ما أكثر أهمية من مشكلة أخرى؟ ماالمعايير التى تجعلنا نعتبر حلاً ما ملائماً أكثر من غيره ؟ما العلاقة بين المشكلات العلمية والمشكلات غير العلمية ؟فمثل هذه الموضوعات لم يتم تناولها بالتفصيل الذى تستحقه كما يره لودان .كما أنه أيضاً في كتابة هذا يوضح العلاقة بين العقلاينة والتقدم ،وكيف أن العديد من المناقشات عن العقلانية والتقدم لم تكن قابلة للتطبيق على المسار الفعلى لتطور العلم ؛ لذا حين يقدم منظوره عن التقدم ومشكلاته ،فإنه يستعين بالوقائع التاريخية على نطاق واسع لاختبار النموذج الذى يقدمه.
