يتضمن الكتاب سبعة فصول، يبدأ أولها بمقدمة تمهيدية عن طبيعة العلم والبحث العلمي وخصائصه وأهداف العلم، ويتناول الفصل الثاني مشكلة البحث، مفهوم المشكلة والطرق التي تبتدىء بها المشكلة، ومصادرها، ويعرض لطبيعة الفروض وكيفية صياغتها، وتحديد المتغيرات أنواعها وعلاقاتها وطرق ضبطها. ويعرض الفصل الثالث للعينات أنواعها وكيفية اختيارها، ويختص الفصل الرابع بالأدوات وأساليب جمع البيانات عن البحث العلمي من ملاحظة – ومقابلة – واستفتاءات – واختبارات ومقاييس، وتوافر شروطها. أما الفصل الخامس فيتناول مناهج البحث وتصميماتها، ونماذج مقترحة بشكل مفصل ومتعمق. ويعرض الفصل السادس لاستخدامات الإحصاء في البحوث النفسية والتربوية مع إعطاء أمثلة على كل معادلة. وقد خصص الفصل السابع للطريقة العلمية في كتابة خطة البحث وإعداد التقرير النهائي للبحث.
